Great Gifts for the Holidays

I don't know about you but that phrase makes my stomach turn.

I do want to give my girl Laura props for sending me a hilarious and wonderful gift of four garden gnomes. I'm looking forward to naming them all.

This past weekend Wyatt threw a Hanukkah party. I made Challah for the first time. It turned out okay. We also had cabbage, brisket and of course, latkes!

The bread.

The guests.

  1. Mazel Tov on the Challah! What kind of latkes did you make? I'm a traditionalist, but my buddy Daniel makes sweet potato latkes with pumpkin type spices, very tasty.
Btw, most people don't realize it but Hanukkah celebrates the military triumph of the Maccabean Jews over the Assyrian Greeks; it is the only purely militaristic of the Jewish holidays. Unlike other holidays where either God or Jewish wit saved us from our enemies, Hanukkah teaches Jews the value of good ole fashioned slaughter of your enemies (I mean they deserved it but still...) As the lyrics to Maoz Tzur, one of the songs we sing on Hanukkah, say:
"When You will have prepared the slaughter
    for the blaspheming foe,
Then I shall complete with a song of hymn
    the dedication of the Altar."

    Happy Holidays!!!!

  2. Thanks for the info Sashka! We just made straight up potato latkes and ate them with apple sauce. Sweet potato will be our next venture. Happy Holidays to you too!
